A short résumé: The Author

Born in 1936, O levels, commercial training, Commercial Specialist, own business, Commercial Judge. Two children, three grandchildren. It wasn't until I retired that I found out what my purpose in life is. Today, I am thankful in the knowledge that I am guided and led in the right direction. This gives me strength, and at the same time a lot of pleasure, and takes the load of responsibility off my shoulders, because everything takes its course. My greatest wish isn't to have more prosperity or money, but to be content and to live in harmony. However, I also want to contribute to the urgently needed change in society. Perhaps I can transfer some of my enthusiasm to my readers.

Foreword

by Dr Andreas Thum, Orthopaedic specialist.

Even though from 1950 until today, a period of over 50 years, the health budget has increased fifty times from 5 billion to 250 billion euros, chronic diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, slipped discs, allergies, psychiatric illness) have increased by only eight times in the same period. Young people are particularly at risk:

From a total of 350 000 newly diagnosed cases of type 2 diabetes, one third of sufferers are youths under eighteen years old!

Before the 2nd World War a medical student would rarely have seen a patient suffering a heart attack. Today, even for the layman, it is a daily occurrence. One hundred years ago 80 year olds died with all their own teeth still intact. Today 98% of 10 year olds already have tooth decay.

Strokes and hemiplegia (one-sided paralysis) used to be a rarity, but it isn't unusual to find 40 year olds with these conditions nowadays.

Are these developments really the result of people living longer, or can they be explained by better diagnostics?

Shouldn't we be urgently looking for the real cause of this problem and research the long overdue changes needed to challenge the view that is currently held by the health system?

We need to leave the 'purely' expensive diagnosis and therapy of existing diseases behind and start concentrating on preventative measures: Disease prophylaxis + maintaining health = preventative medicine.

This is easier to attain than people realise, and in fact all classes of society would benefit from the health advice and practical experience offered by a skilled specialist of long-standing.

There are basically three pillars to maintaining health:

1.  Regular exercise in the fresh air, and by daylight, for one to two hours a day. Generally, exercise is carried out too ambitiously and it is therefore important to start with qualified instructors who can control your heart rate and lactose levels. Within four weeks, with expert instruction, you will have acquired the theoretical foundations, which will hold you in good stead for the rest of your life.

2.  Diet of living foods, which haven't been destroyed by cooking or industrial processing. You will have gained comprehensive knowledge about this in about six months and, when you change your diet, the more severe your symptoms are the stricter you will need to be. You can expect a significant improvement in your symptoms within 2-4 weeks.

3.  A positive attitude to life, that isn't plagued by anxiety but characterised by confidence, self-worth and the corresponding love of this way of life, should be seen as a difficult, but never the less, an important part of disease prevention. Negative emotions, such as hate, anger, worry, envy and fear are indeed the main creators of acidity in civilised man.

If many of my medical colleagues do not share this view, it is because they are not yet aware of these facts. On the whole university and hospital training ignores the holistic and prophylactic approach maintained by the medically trained fore thinkers, such as, Professor Billroth, Professor Sauerbruch, Professor Nissen, Professor Büchner, Professor Heilmeyer, Dr Bates, Dr Bircher-Benner. Dr Bruker, Professor Kollath, Dr van Aaken, Professor Alexandrovicz, Professor Wendt, Dr Campbell, Dr Buchwald, Professor Hartenbach, Dres Krebs and Krebs, Dr Hamer and many others.

We can only find the right way forward by impartially striving for the truth, and in the same way the well-informed, responsible patient looks for the doctor-friend-colleague, who can influence the individual's positive self-healing power, amongst the many excellently trained, hard-working, diligent physicians.

Introduction

There are already a lot of books available about arthritis, so just why have we produced this book? I certainly haven't read all of them, but no matter how many books I have on my bookshelf, none of them offers the sufferer a complete, yet easy to understand, step by step guide. This is why this book has been written, so that the reader knows exactly what to do, right from the first page. Simply begin and become healthy. Ensuing questions are answered further on in the book.

To become healthy we need to consider several things. Firstly, we need to recognise the cause of the disease. This book contains much valuable information to help you. Then you need to be prepared and really want to get healthy again. “That's obvious“, you might say, but in some people the will to succeed sometimes diminishes when they come to realise what they should or have to change in their life. Many are disturbed by the fact that they need to change anything at all. At the end of the day you need to be prepared to do a lot of things yourself, and above all to expand your knowledge base. This means that you have to read and read again, really swot up on things, because you won't achieve anything if you don't learn. Then you need to put it into practise, try out and do.

I should mention one more important point. This book is based on my own, personal experience with arthritis.

I have managed to avoid joint replacement surgery and I have made it my task to share my experience with others. I expect that most of my readers will also have positive experiences, if they rigorously follow the rules of the Holistic-Arthritis-Therapy (HAT): You have to be consistent if you want to succeed. However, because everyone is different, I cannot guarantee that everyone's body will react as wanted and expected. It also depends on how severe the joint damage is. My joints were not yet necrotic. This happens when not only the cartilage, but also the adjoining bone is corroded by acid. I can't say for sure if this can be cured. The GAT is still useful because other joints may also be affected by arthritis. If a joint never the less has to be replaced, you could protect the other joints by using the GAT and also prevent, or even cure, the other civilisation diseases that are a result of too much protein in the diet. You will find a lot of useful information in this book to help you.

It has also been said that I am against doctors. This simply isn't true. Our doctors are very hard-working and always try to relieve our suffering. Unfortunately, they aren't taught very much about the importance of diet during their training. This is a fault of the health system. I readily accept that I am against this health system. Something needs to be done about this as a matter of urgency, and am spending all my energy during my old age to ensure that my children and grandchildren do not have to suffer from the same mistakes. I ask my readers to make a contribution by sharing the success you have from using this book with others. I have tried talking to those responsible, but it falls on deaf ears. They will have to move, if more and more people demand change.

How it all started
“You have osteoarthritis, which is normal wear and tear. I'm afraid you'll have to live with it“, was the 'wonderful' diagnosis made by my doctor. Wait for ten years and you could possibly have a joint replacement, but you're too young for that now.” I was only 49 years old and I had to get used to the pain. He wanted to prescribe me pain-killers, but then remembered that I didn't like taking any.

“Why do I have to wait for ten years, can't it be done earlier?“

“These prostheses only last on average about 15 years. They can't be replaced as often as you want.“

“Will I be cured after this operation?“

“No“, he said, “Arthritis can't be cured. It can also affect other joints. You can replace all the other joints except for the spinal vertebrae. If you get it in your back, you will have a real problem“.

What a rosy looking future. Should I start looking for a suitable rope or bridge ? No, I'm not the sort of person to give up. Better get a second opinion. Strange how all the  opinions are the same. They must have all been at the same university. Slowly I began to have doubts. Incurable? I spoke to friends about it and we came to the conclusion that if the cause of the disease was known, a cure could be found. But what causes arthritis? The doctors gave me lots of different answers to this question.

“That is wear and tear, age-related erosion“ and always the comment about an “unavoidable operation“.

An inner voice told me that this simply couldn't be true. I didn't want to believe this! So, I started to search for the cause of the disease myself. There isn't anything to be found on television, but perhaps in suitable books. I had to search for information.

Bookshops have a lot of books about arthritis. I spent every free minute of the day, and many hours at night, reading anything which seemed to be relevant and worthwhile. I didn't notice that some authors obviously don't know what they are talking about until much later on. Especially promising books with titles like, “Healing-Arthritis“, 'The Arthritis Cure', 'Delectable Food For Arthritis and Arthrosis', 'How to relieve the symptoms of arthritis', and many other books, proved to be absolutely useless.

At last I was given some valuable advice by some kind fellows. 'Fit for Life' by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond was the first really useful book I read. Even better and more exciting is 'Fit for Life Book 2'.

'If you want to be healthy, forget the cooking-pot', by Wandmaker gave me the decisive impulse and for Christmas 1993 I was given a copy of 'Protein-Storage Diseases' by Lothar Wendt. From now on there was no stopping me. I had found out the cause – not only of arthritis, but also of other diseases, which are a result of our highly developed civilised society.

Suddenly I had the answer in front of me. It wasn't taking tablets or fiddling about with different remedies, but eating differently, however, following a specific eating plan. So, what's the connection?

Professor Lothar Wendt discovered the protein stores and the hyper-acidity caused by over-eating animal protein. Acid is also produced by the consumption of coffee, black tea, sweet foods, alcohol and cigarettes. These, and all animal products should be avoided in future. For the first two years I gave up even drinking a small glass of red wine or beer, which I occasionally enjoy again today.

“And what should we live from?” This anxious question has already been answered, if we consider that neither Mr Wandmaker, the Diamonds, or thousands of vegetarians have ever suffered from being hungry.

You needn't starve either, because fruit and salads, vegetables, potatoes and wholemeal bread can be very tasty. You can only have an opinion about this, if you try it for yourself. Start today, because your pain has a very clear cause. Every piece of meat, cheese, fish, cup of coffee, black tea, and also each cigarette causes joint pain. This pain can be reduced if you change your diet and eat differently.

My lecture about the cause of arthritis

Many of us own a car and know that it sometimes doesn't work like it should. The mechanic needs to look for the root of the problem. When we don't know the cause, it would be useless to change a wheel when  something could be wrong with the gears.

The same applies to people and we need to look for the cause of a problem before we can deal with it. It wouldn't help to remove a lobe of the lung, if you have something wrong with the liver. However, the comparison between a car or a machine stops there, because a human body can repair itself and a machine cannot.

Regarding the theme “The aetiology of arthritis” When I was 49 years old I went to my doctor about the pain in my knee and hips and he told me, “You have  normal wear and tear. I'm afraid you'll have to live with it. You could possibly have a joint replacement in ten years time, but you're too young for that now. I can give you some tablets for the pain.”

When I had recovered from the shock, I began to think about it. This was clear to me: “This can't be quite true. My body can heal itself, so why suddenly doesn't my cartilage re-grow? My friends helped me to find a way, of which I had never heard of, the way to the art of healing through experience. I read many books and articles, went to seminars, exchanged experiences in discussion groups and became a member of a self-help group. Then I learned of a theory, which had not been scientifically proven, but, with the correct application, had already helped a lot of people. Isn't it surprising that something can be of help, although it hasn't been scientifically recognised.

In April 2001, Professor Karin Kraft, then lecturer at the medical outpatients department of the University of Bonn, wrote to me: “ You must certainly know that this decade has been named the decade of arthritis research.  In this respect it is clear that medical science does not know the cause of arthritis.”

If our scientists have been unsuccessful in finding the cause, it could be because they have been going about it in the wrong way. Dr H.-G. Schmidt wrote in his book: “How Nature Can Help Arthritis”: “Our researchers have been unsuccessful in chronic diseases, like arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes and others, because they only look at the symptoms and not the cause.

They concentrate on the damaged cartilage, injecting lubricants into the joint cavity, transplanting cartilage, and if all else fails, cutting out the joint and replacing it with a prosthesis, which isn't  a method of healing. They don't know what caused the disease. They could find out, but they don't treat the patient in a holistic way, that isn't the usual practice in medical science, yet.

Conventional thinking

Health begins in the head. I'm always saying that. What does orthodox medicine show? The French philosopher Descartes introduced the Linear-causal-analytical way of thinking, along with his “Rules for the Direction of the Mind”. This still applies today, even though Mr Descartes died over 350 years ago. This is what it looks like:

pain

>

joint

>

cartilage damage

>

Wear and tear

Reading from left to write shows:

The patient has pain. He points to his joints, “This hurts”!  The doctor diagnoses cartilage damage and thinks this is the reason for the joint pain. The cartilage is treated ,as explained above. There can never be long-term healing, because the cause of the cartilage damage isn't treated. That's the same for any of the other measures, which only take the cartilage into consideration. The diagnosis is “wear and tear” with an added explanation: “This is normal wear and tear, age-related or worn out. Nothing can be done about it, you'll have to live with it”, because with this school of thought it is impossible to come to any other conclusion. The doctor wants to help and so offers a joint replacement. This isn't healing, but at least the pain will subside for about 15 years. That is the average length of time a prosthesis lasts for.

The other school of thought

In natural healing it is widely agreed that it is impossible to find a connection between a disease and its first signs and symptoms, because the human body is too diverse. Dr Schmidt also said this in his book “How Nature Can Help Arthritis”. He believes that the holistic-multi-causal-network
school of thought is required to get to the cause of a disease. Graphically it looks like this:

The person is the focal point in this school of thought. Shouldn't the whole person always be the focal point? Starting our observations with pain, and following the circle clockwise, it becomes clear that every section leads to the centre and therefore centres on the person. We look there for the cause, for the answer to the question:

 “why?”

And we can only find an answer to this question, if we take the person as a whole. Why is the cartilage damaged? Why doesn't it regenerate? The holistic approach reveals that the body is too acidic. This is the next section in the diagram, that I have labelled acid. This is the answer to the first two questions, because acid destroys cartilage and prevents the growth of new cartilage cells.

Fantastic, you think, now we have the cause. Acid can be neutralised, so get the acid-blockers, the Rebasit, the Basica, the Tagamet.

However, hyper-acidity is not the cause but only a step on the way there. It doesn't make any sense just to neutralise the acid, which is medically possible, but wrong because the next question has not been answered, yet:

“Why is the body too acidic?” Professor Lothar Wendt has found the answer. A holistic examination leads to the conclusion that the body is over-fed on protein. He convincingly explained about this problem in 1984 in his book “The Protein-Storage Disease”. It is only possible to achieve such a protein mast with meat and other animal products, because these contain a high concentration of protein.

We already know that large amounts of protein in the body causes hyper-acidity. This leads us to another causal connection (causality). If we come to the conclusion that diet is the thing that is wrong and construct a therapy to remedy this, then we can think of healing. Dr H.-G. Schmidt also says this in his book: “How Nature Can Help Arthritis”.

Experience in this easy and logical therapy has shown that pain – and this completes the circle – will be reduced within a few weeks, and with long-term treatment  it could even disappear completely.

We only need a doctor for the diagnosis. The healing, or at least a great improvement, can be attained without medical means, without medication, whereby further measures such as physiotherapy and exercise could be beneficial. If you look at it in this way, arthritis isn't a disease that requires orthopaedic or surgical measures. This is something for the nutritionist or dietician.

In orthodox medicine, which is apparently based on safe scientific measures, the cause is not known. Why not? Doesn't experience sometimes produce an effective method of healing? We are told that it is wear and tear, but that isn't the cause of our problem. It might be because doctors don't learn anything about nutrition during their training, which Dr Bruker, who has written many books about nutrition and who founded a clinic in Lahnstein, said in one of his lectures. As far as I know there is only one chair in Germany for natural medicine, in Rostock, but the job title of Specialist for Nutritional Medicine doesn't exist. Whether knowledge of empirical medicine is taught there, I really don't know.

This might be because the demand for measurements is overrated, a demand that comes from the naïve idea of today's materialism: “What I can't see, can't measure, can't compare to, doesn't exist”. We, and all sufferers, are satisfied with the result, the improvement of our condition. These are worthy experiences and Dr Zycha calls for, “the principles of experience” to be valued more highly.

By the way, we think that there is no such thing as wear and tear caused by being over-used or worn out. This wear and tear should be seen as a process caused by acid-damage or acid corrosion, instead. Our opinion is based on the principle of experience.

This principle has to be – according to Dr Zycha - a constant, firm and valid assumption. There is no doubt about it. If we notice the pain has disappeared, then it has gone, we don’t need any scientific evidence. Our subjective feeling surpasses every scientific theory. If the scientists can’t stop demanding randomised double-blind studies, then it is time for them to realise that their dogmas are unrealistic, and as was mentioned at the beginning, it is time for people to change their thinking and behaviour.

Take part without risk

It is up to you to get involved in our concept. I would like to mention one really important factor: There is absolutely no risk to health when using this nutritional plan.

Changing the way we eat is at the fore, but is not enough in itself. We also need regular exercise, fresh air, sunlight clean water and a balanced mental state, in other words a very healthy lifestyle. (Known in the trade as dietetics).

A change in the health system was called for at the Health Day 2000 in Berlin, a health movement from below along with holistic integrated health provision. It is necessary to have a network of all health and patient initiatives. In this sense we are also looking to working with doctors. This could mean that an arthritis patient would be referred to a self-help group as soon as possible. Several doctors in the north Hessen region do this already.

Our participants are not interested in whether a method used to get rid of their pain is scientifically approved or not. It is enough that they become healthy. However, our aim is to inform the whole population about  our success. At the same time it is desirable that scientists treat this topic seriously and publish their work for all to see.

There is a problem with this, which is probably very difficult to solve. Scientists only publish their research results if some form of financial advantage can be gained. Food is much cheaper nowadays and additional costs are not required. Nobody can make a profit that way. The call for more scientific evidence falls on deaf ears. Those who are against our measures know this and they are demanding scientific evidence, although they won't produce it themselves.

On the other hand, they are making a great deal of money from artificial joint replacements. Patients do not complain, because it helps reduce the joint pain. Whether they are as happy about it 15 years later, when they need a second operation, remains to be seen. Wouldn't it be better to inform them about it beforehand, so that they could perhaps choose an alternative form of treatment? I'm waiting for the first patient to sue his doctor for actual bodily harm, because he hadn't been informed about Holistic Arthritis Therapy. (This has already happened in Belgium).

Is this lifestyle beneficial in any other way?

Our members have often surprised us with their reports of success in treating not only their arthritis, but other ailments, which have either improved or disappeared. Some of them have reported that they no longer need to take medication for high blood pressure, because it had now returned to normal. The reason for this can easily be explained.

If the very fine hair-like blood vessels, the capillaries, become narrowed because of protein deposits on the capillary walls, it is difficult for red blood cells to flow through them. A raised blood pressure is needed to push the cells through the narrow vessels, and this increases the workload of the heart. Future effects on the heart muscle are predetermined by this work overload. This is explained very clearly in the book “Healthy Life with the Protein Reduction Diet”, by Mayr & Stossier.

Raised blood pressure can also be a problem for young people, long before any signs of arthritis or type 2 diabetes occur. All three diseases belong to the so called civilisation diseases, named by Dr Bruker. Professor Lothar Wendt includes them in the list of protein storage diseases, caused by the customary over-eating of protein foods. Other contributory factors, such as stress, lead more and more often to these circulatory problems in young people.

According to the view of natural healing it is wrong to control these hypertension problems with long term medication. It is much better to reduce the protein deposits in the capillaries. This is relatively easy to achieve if you follow the nutritional plan set out in this booklet, and so it isn't only helpful for arthritis sufferers.

Low blood pressure is also regulated with this natural lifestyle. Participants of our self-help groups were soon able to go completely without the early morning cup of coffee to get them started in the day.

At the Arthritis-Self-Help-Group's 34th monthly meeting on 4th February 2003, Professor Thomas Wendt spoke about “The Concept of Protein-Storage Diseases.” Afterwards he invited the audience to ask questions. He said, “If I put myself in the roll of a traditionally trained doctor, and I read in a natural healing journal that one measure could be effective the against serious risk factors, such as, heart attack, stroke, high blood- pressure,  type 2 diabetes and almost all the rheumatic illnesses and allergies, then I would be very sceptical.”

What his father discovered several years ago, and what he convincingly describes in his book 'The Protein-Storage Diseases”, is a medical revolution. It encompasses all of these risk factors. All of them are a result of overfilled protein stores and all of them can be cured by by emptying these overfilled protein stores.

This can be achieved by using the Holistic-Arthritis-Therapy (HAT). This valuable knowledge has not been accepted by the powers of society, yet, because it can't be converted into pure cash.

----------------------------------

Recently a physician told me: “We aren't allowed to use Professor Lothar Wendt's therapy in our surgery, because it is not scientifically proven.”

Upon which I asked him for a favour and said: “I am looking for the definitive study, which shows the absolute necessity of a joint prosthesis. Since there are more than 200,000 artificial joint replacements performed every year, there must be some evidence. Otherwise, I can't see how our surgeons would be allowed to do this non-reversible procedure. Please name me the source or where I could find these research studies.”

The reply was immediate: “ As far as I know, there haven't been any precise research studies made about the necessity of artificial joint replacement.”

This is what the medical world looks like. In such an operation two bones are sawed off, filed down and destroyed in such a way that they can never grow again. Irreversible. This is allowed although there is no scientific proof. A nutrition-based therapy, which can be implemented by the patient, even without having to ask a doctor, and which can be stopped at any time without any danger, is not allowed to be used in a doctor's surgery? Excuse me, but I'm not with you.
